Cooperative for Human Services has long recognized the importance of sibling relationships for individuals with developmental disabilities. Siblings provide invaluable advocacy, emotional support and friendship to their brothers and sisters throughout the course of their ever-changing lives. CHS is committed to supporting these relationships by providing opportunities to exchange information, share experiences and learn about available resources for siblings.

On July 24, 2025, CHS hosted the first event in a series of social networking and educational workshop for siblings and other family members. Guest presenter, Mary Valachovic, President and CEO of The ARC of Plymouth and Upper Cape Cod led a workshop entitled “Honoring the Sibling Experience” with family members of people served by CHS. Mary, a sibling herself, discussed the growing “sibling movement”, what the sibling experience looks like through the different life stages from childhood to adulthood, and the importance of self-care for all family members. In a relaxed, intimate setting, she led a guided conversation that enabled participants to talk about their shared experiences – both the challenges and the joys of loving a family member with an intellectual disability.

Additional series events will include two workshops on Future Planning to be held in the fall.

On September 16, 2025, the first event in of our fall series will feature Leo Sarkissian. Leo recently retired from his role as Executive Director of the ARC of Massachusetts after 33 transformative leadership years. He now is Innovation Development Director with the ARC. Leo will share his expertise on the importance of planning as well as current and anticipated funding challenges. His presentation on this subject is not to be missed.

Then, on October 7, 2025 Cynthia Haddad, Certified Financial Planner Professional and a Chartered Special Needs Consultant, will present important information concerning the many aspects of financial planning. Cindy is a nationally sought-after speaker on planning for families of individuals with disabilities and is co-author of the groundbreaking book, The Special Needs Planning Guide.
